China gives Cambodia nine naval patrol boats

Thursday, November 8, 2007

REAM, Cambodia -- China on Wednesday handed over nine naval patrol boats to Cambodia in a sign of deepening military cooperation between the two countries. The boats will be used to boost protection along Cambodia's coast, providing security against piracy and other crimes, Defence Minister Tea Banh said.

"Our good friend China has always provided good experience and modern technology to the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces," he said at the hand-over in southwest Cambodia. China also gave six patrol boats to Cambodia in 2005 to bolster its ageing fleet.

In August, Cambodia announced its plans to increase the number of naval personnel from 1,000 to 3,000, as well as to create a force of some 2,000 marines in a bid to strengthen its offshore defences.
